A Plastic-Bag Free Dungog

Boomerang Bags        Boomerang Bags

“Boomerang Bags” http://boomerangbags.org/ is a national initiative, tackling plastic pollution by educating and encouraging local communities, including the Dungog community  to use a Boomerang Bag (or their own) instead of a plastic bag.

Exactly the type of project Local Living Dungog had been interested in implementing, and we have donated several hundred dollars to the campaign to get boomerang bags happening in our town.

Boomerang Bags  launched on 17th August 2016 at the James Theatre, and has being going really well ever since!

CHANGE: Lovey's Supa IGA Dungog Store Manager Carolyn Andrews with some alternatives to plastic bags.As well as providing a box of boomerang bags in the store, Dungog IGA took their commitment to reducing plastic in Dungog and went plastic free from July 24- August 20, 2017. The community support for this plastic free month means that as well as free to borrow boomerang bags, the IGA now offers free cardboard boxes, and also sells reusable bags or paper bags for your groceries and mesh sacks for your loose fruit and veg. More details available from the Dungog Chronicle

There are always bags being made, if you’re interested in getting involved contact Michelle Dado 4992 1268 / 0418 257 810.

Local Living Dungog hopes to reduce plastic in our community: other ways to find better options than plastic shopping bags include:

  • A range of re-usable shopping bags are now available at very low cost at Lovey’s IGA.  The main thing is to keep some in the car/handbag/pocket so you don’t forget to take them to the shops!
  • Dungog Village Store also stocks some great “Dungog” styled jute bags.
  • The Dungog Dollar Shop has some great roll-up bags you can put on a key-ring.

“Make Your Own Shopping Bag” Competition

In May 2012 Local Living dungog initiated a “Make Your Own Shopping Bag” Competition. We had a great time parading bags!  Prizes were awarded for most eco-friendly, most colourful, most humorous and best effort.  Janelle O’Neil from Dungog Chronicle and Ivan Skaines from Dungog Council were the judges.  The call for a decent “Man-bag” was answered by some fantastic entries including pockets for paintbrushes, shopping list and tools.

Our bag comp. logo below was designed on a reusable bag by Sarah from Dungog High:white backgroundDungog High School Student Council support and promoted this competition for us.  Prizes included afternoon tea at Cafe Dungog and a free Driving Lesson.  The bags were displayed at Creative Crafts and Fabrics after the parade.
